Hello 2005! So yeah, it’s been a whole year. Wow. Didn’t think I would actually keep the site going for this long. I would’ve posted as the clock ticked past like last time, but was a few thousand miles away from home this morning, so it wasn’t going to happen.
So yeah, I’ll try and post some updates eventually. I'm really busy. Don’t worry, I’ll eventually do something though. Later. Have a good year!
Permalink | Posted Sat, 1 Jan 2005 at 9:44:08 PM ESTYeah, that’s right, I switched to Linux. All I can say is I would’ve switched earlier if I knew what I was missing. I had experimented with Knoppix before, but hadn’t done anything serious. So, as soon as my new harddrive arrived (my Windows drive was pretty much full), I shoved it in an installed Debian. I found out later I had made a good choice.
Since I wasn’t really doing anything that rode on 100% stability (I don’t think anyone needs that after experiencing Windows), I opted to install Debian v3.1, codename “Sarge”. Sarge is the current “testing” distribution (it will probably be officially released sometime in September). I used the new Debian-Installer, which was also a great choice. The install was a breeze, and since it was a netinstall, all the software was up to date (except the kernel, but that wasn’t too old either).
After I installed Debian, I took off running. I quickly learned how to install Debian packages, which really isn’t much of a feat (it’s easier that installing Windows software). OK, I did hit one snag. I did something stupid I’m sure (never quite figured out what it was), and ended up having to reformat and reinstall. But no big deal, it had only been up for a few days anyhow. Nothing was going to stop me now.
I’m now more productive on Linux than I was on Linux. I use The GIMP for image editing, Bluefish for coding, gFTP for FTP, and, of course, Firefox for web browsing. OK, sure, I may have had a quicker time acclimating becuase I was already using Firefox and The GIMP on Windows, but still, Linux really caters for the developer. And don’t get me wrong, it’s really great for end users too.
In short: for me, there’s no turning back. Once your desktop looks this good, why would you?
Permalink | Posted Tue, 24 Aug 2004 at 10:51:26 PM ESTOK, here’s the new layout I was talking about. I’m calling it “Probe”, since I decided I need to name my designs to keep the files straight during development. So yeah, here it is. I’ll post again a little bit later, since I’ve got a lot to talk about (it’s been a while).
Permalink | Posted Tue, 24 Aug 2004 at 3:56:17 PM ESTThis school year is finally over. To celebrate, I decided to release the new design that I’ve had in the works for a while. Now nobody’s eyes will (read “should”) bleed from coming here. But don’t expect this one to last for long, I’ll probably think of a new and (hopefully) better one soon.
Yeah, I know it’s been a long time since I last posted. A lot has happened. The web site I kept on talking about has been released. Ta-da: the Bay Trail Middle School web site is now on the web. Man, that feels good to be over with. Plus, Mozilla Firefox 0.9 has been released. So go download it.
I’m sure I forgot to mention something. Oh well. At least I posted.
Permalink | Posted Tue, 22 Jun 2004 at 11:50:19 AM ESTYeah, I haven't posted in a long time. But that’s okay. I guess. Well, been busy. A trip, the project I’ve mentioned before, the ASL site, and others. Look out for me and Jeff’s new company, to be put out soon. And I need a better layout. A much better one. Too many people have been scarred for life by this one.
Permalink | Posted Mon, 5 Apr 2004 at 8:26:44 PM ESTSorry for the sparse posts. I’ve been really busy! But, I promise, when I have time I’ll add the stuff I mentioned before…
Anyway, down to business. Does anyone know of a free standards-based WYSIWYG control? As in the type I can embed into my self-created PHP/MySQL CMS? Anybody? Please? The closest I’ve come to one is KTML, but that still generates FONT tags for new fonts any sizes. Yuck. If I can figure out how to change it (it’s open-source), then it might be able to use it. Even if I can't change it, then I'll have to run the output through HTML Tidy, probably with a Perl or Python wrapper. Yuck.
